COON RAPIDS, MN

At a time of year when winter typically loosens its grip, the ice in Coon Rapids remains very much alive.

Inside the Coon Rapids Ice Center, a new spring session of the city’s Skating School is set to begin, offering residents an opportunity to extend the season and sharpen their skills in a structured, community-centered environment.

The upcoming program will run Monday evenings from April 6 through May 11, with no class scheduled on April 20, forming a six-week instructional series designed for participants ages four through adult. Registration is now open through the City of Coon Rapids.

A Structured Pathway Onto the Ice

The Skating School operates under the nationally recognized Learn to Skate USA curriculum, a standardized framework used across the country to guide skill development in both recreational and competitive skating.

At its core, the program emphasizes the fundamentals that define confident skating: balance, edge control, posture, and coordinated movement. Instruction is layered progressively, allowing beginners to find their footing while giving returning skaters a clear path toward more advanced technique.

Participants are grouped by age and ability across several instructional tracks:

  • Snowplow Sam introduces children ages 4 to 6 to the ice, focusing on confidence, balance, and basic mobility
  • Basic Skills (Levels 1–6) builds foundational techniques such as forward and backward skating, stopping, and turning
  • Teen and Adult Lessons provide age-specific instruction for participants 15 and older, often blending fitness with skill development
  • Specialized Tracks, including introductory figure skating and hockey skating, offer a transition into discipline-specific training

The result is a program that meets skaters where they are, whether stepping onto the ice for the first time or preparing for more advanced competition.

Professional Instruction Anchored in Safety and Standards

The program is led by Skating School Director Karen Meck, a master-rated coach through the Professional Skaters Association, with instruction delivered by a team of certified coaches trained under the SkateSafe framework.

That structure reflects a deliberate emphasis on both technical quality and participant safety, ensuring that each session is not only instructional but also supportive and secure. Class sizes are intentionally limited to maintain a low student-to-instructor ratio, allowing for individualized feedback and steady progression.

A Community Hub Beyond the Season

For the City of Coon Rapids, the Ice Center represents more than a seasonal amenity. It is a year-round gathering space where recreation, skill-building, and community life intersect.

Spring skating, in particular, carries a different rhythm. Without the urgency of winter leagues or holiday schedules, the sessions tend to attract a mix of first-time learners, families, and adults returning to the ice after years away. The atmosphere is quieter, more deliberate, and often more accessible.

City officials say that accessibility remains central to the program’s design, with offerings that welcome a broad cross-section of the community and encourage lifelong participation in skating.

Registration Now Open

Enrollment for the spring session is currently available through the City’s official Skating School page, where residents can review class levels, schedules, and program details:
