COON RAPIDS, MN

The City of Coon Rapids is entering the spring of 2026 with a wide-ranging agenda that includes infrastructure upgrades, a proposed local sales tax, seasonal maintenance operations, and expanded community programming.

City officials outlined the initiatives in the city’s Spring 2026 newsletter, detailing plans that will affect residents across housing, transportation, public safety, and civic engagement .

Among the most significant developments is a proposal to implement a local half-percent sales tax, pending approval from the Minnesota Legislature. If authorized, the measure would go before voters in November and would fund two major capital projects: improvements to the police station and City Hall, and an expansion of the community center at the Coon Rapids Ice Center. The tax would remain in place only until project costs are repaid .

At the same time, the city is moving forward with multiple infrastructure and maintenance efforts. These include street reconstruction projects, seasonal road maintenance, and utility work such as fire hydrant flushing and street sweeping.

Public safety and quality-of-life initiatives are also expanding. Following positive results from enhanced security measures at Crooked Lake Park, the city plans to extend similar monitoring and camera installations to Lions Coon Creek Park.

In addition, state law-driven property assessments will bring city appraisers to approximately 4,400 homes this year as part of a five-year inspection cycle.

City leaders are also emphasizing community engagement, with neighborhood meetings, a seasonal farmers market, and recreational programming scheduled throughout the summer.

The combined efforts reflect a coordinated push to address both immediate operational needs and long-term investment priorities, as the city prepares residents for key decisions in the months ahead.
