MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Weekly Free Food Giveaway in Coon Rapids Operates Under No-Barrier Access Model
COON RAPIDS, MN (Friday May 1, 2026) A weekly free food distribution program continues to serve residents in Coon Rapids and surrounding communities, offering groceries each Friday without registration, documentation, or eligibility requirements.
The program, known as the Friday Free Food Giveaway, is hosted at Coon Rapids United Methodist Church and operated by Spirit of Matthew 25, a nonprofit organization providing food access services across Anoka County.
Distribution takes place weekly from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with participants entering through Door A of the church facility.
No-Barrier Access Model
The program operates under a no-barrier model intended to provide immediate access to food while preserving participant privacy. Organizers do not require identification, proof of income, residency verification, or advance registration. The distribution is open to individuals and families from Coon Rapids, Anoka County, and surrounding areas.
Food is available on a first come, first served basis, with supply levels dependent on donations and retail recovery partnerships.
Distribution Process
To manage demand, organizers use a structured entry system. Numbered tickets are typically distributed beginning at approximately 3:00 p.m., with food distribution starting at 4:00 p.m.
Participants are called in order and guided through a market-style setup, allowing them to select items based on household needs rather than receiving prepackaged boxes. Item limits are generally applied to ensure equitable distribution.
Food Supply and Inventory
Available items vary weekly and are largely sourced through food recovery partnerships with local retailers and community organizations. Inventory typically includes:
- Fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables
- Dairy products, eggs, and meat
- Bread and baked goods
- Shelf-stable pantry items
Some items may be near or past labeled “best by” dates, consistent with standard food shelf practices. Participants are encouraged to review items and select based on their preferences.
Expanded Distribution Schedule
In addition to the Friday giveaway, the organization operates other weekly and monthly food distribution events at the same location:
- Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., focused on bakery items and supplemental perishables
- Second Sunday of each month from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., operating as a drive-through distribution with prepacked boxes
Program Scope and Operations
Spirit of Matthew 25 launched the initiative in 2021 and has expanded operations to serve a growing number of households. The program also supports additional efforts, including a seasonal community garden and a school-based pantry serving students experiencing housing instability.
Organizers report that the program serves more than 1,000 households per month and distributes recovered food sourced from local partners to reduce waste and increase access.
Access and Contact
The program remains open to all residents seeking food assistance. Organizers recommend early arrival due to demand and limited supply.
