Major Highway 169 Intersection Project to Close 109th Avenue in Brooklyn Park Through September

BROOKLYN PARK, MN (June 10, 2026) Drivers who rely on 109th Avenue to cross Highway 169 in Brooklyn Park will need to plan for months of detours beginning June 15 as a major intersection reconstruction project moves into one of its most disruptive phases.

The City of Brooklyn Park announced that 109th Avenue will be closed on both sides of Highway 169 starting June 15 while crews reconstruct the intersection, add new traffic lanes, and replace the existing traffic signal. The closure is expected to remain in place until Sept. 8.

City officials say the project is designed to increase the capacity of one of the northwest metro's growing transportation corridors and improve traffic operations at an intersection that serves residential neighborhoods, commercial destinations, and developing areas near Highway 169.

The work represents the latest phase of a multi-year effort by Brooklyn Park and the City of Champlin to modernize 109th Avenue, a roadway that forms part of the municipal boundary between the two communities. Planning for the corridor improvements has been underway for years as traffic volumes have increased and development pressures have continued to expand in the northwestern portion of Brooklyn Park.

According to project information released by the city, crews will widen the intersection at 109th Avenue and Highway 169 by adding additional travel lanes intended to improve vehicle throughput and reduce congestion. The existing signal system will also be replaced as part of the reconstruction effort.

The closure will affect traffic both east and west of Highway 169, requiring motorists to use a signed detour route for nearly three months.

Under the detour plan, drivers will be directed to use 101st Avenue, Jefferson Highway, 114th Avenue and Winnetka Avenue to navigate around the construction zone. City officials are encouraging commuters to allow additional travel time, particularly during peak morning and evening traffic periods.

The intersection project is part of broader improvements along the 109th Avenue corridor. Previous phases of construction have included roadway reconstruction and expansion intended to transform portions of 109th Avenue into a four-lane divided roadway between Jefferson Highway and Winnetka Avenue. Local officials have said those improvements are intended to improve both traffic flow and safety along a corridor that has experienced increasing demand from residential growth and commercial activity.

Highway 169 serves as one of Minnesota's most important north-south transportation routes, connecting communities throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area with destinations extending north toward Anoka County, Elk River, Grand Rapids and the Iron Range. In Brooklyn Park, the highway functions as a critical commuter corridor and freight route, making improvements to connecting intersections particularly significant for regional mobility.

The 109th Avenue improvements also coincide with ongoing discussions about future transportation investments and development opportunities in Brooklyn Park's northwest growth area, where city leaders have identified hundreds of acres of land for future residential, commercial, and employment development. Transportation infrastructure improvements are viewed as a key component of supporting that long-term growth.

While the temporary closure is expected to create inconvenience for residents and commuters this summer, city officials say the completed project will provide additional capacity and more efficient traffic movement through one of the area's busiest intersections.
