District plans to release three restructuring options in September as North Minneapolis families raise concerns about the possible effect of additional school closures
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (August 15, 2026) Minneapolis Public Schools is developing a districtwide restructuring proposal that could include school closures and consolidations as officials confront declining enrollment, underused buildings and continuing financial pressures.
The district is expected to release three options for what it calls a “transformation” plan in September. The Minneapolis Board of Education could consider final action in November after the proposals undergo public review.
Minneapolis Public Schools currently enrolls approximately 30,079 students but operates buildings designed to serve about 43,000, according to information reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune.
DISTRICT HAS THOUSANDS OF UNUSED SEATS
The difference between enrollment and building capacity has left the district responsible for maintaining substantially more space than its current student population requires.
Officials must determine whether operating fewer buildings could reduce costs without undermining academic programs, transportation access and educational opportunities.
School Board Chair Collin Beachy said he did not anticipate an immediate, large-scale closure initiative. He acknowledged, however, that closures and consolidations are among the options being considered.
No individual school has been formally selected for closure.
NORTH MINNEAPOLIS FAMILIES RAISE CONCERNS
Ten of the nearly two dozen district schools that fall below Minneapolis Public Schools’ enrollment targets are located on the North Side, which has the city’s highest concentration of Black students.
Families remember previous school closings and the disruption caused by the district’s 2021-2022 attendance-boundary and program restructuring.
Some parents fear that another reorganization could disproportionately affect neighborhoods that have already experienced repeated institutional changes.
North High School illustrates the difficulty of evaluating a school through enrollment figures alone. The district considered closing the historic school approximately 15 years ago but reversed its decision after sustained community opposition.
North High later received building improvements and remains an important educational and cultural institution in North Minneapolis.
DECISIONS EXPECTED LATER THIS YEAR
The district must consider building conditions, staffing, transportation, special-education services, academic programs and geographic access alongside enrollment and operating costs.
Families will receive a clearer picture when the three transformation options are released in September.
Until then, reports that any particular Minneapolis school has already been selected for closure remain unconfirmed.
