MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Southbound Highway 65 Faces Overnight Closure as Blaine Road Project Prepares for Major Traffic Shift

MnDOT will close southbound Highway 65 at County Road 10 in Spring Lake Park overnight September 3 for bridge repairs, while Anoka County is preparing to reopen Radisson Road and close portions of 109th Avenue beginning September 8.

SPRING LAKE PARK, MN (September 3, 2026) Motorists traveling through northern Anoka County face two significant construction-related traffic changes, beginning with another overnight closure of southbound Highway 65 in Spring Lake Park Thursday night and followed next week by a major stage change at 109th Avenue and Radisson Road in Blaine.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close southbound Highway 65 at Anoka County Road 10, also known as Mounds View Boulevard, from 10 p.m. Thursday, September 3, until 5 a.m. Friday.

The overnight closure is required as crews continue repairing the westbound County Road 10 bridge over Highway 65.

A similar closure was scheduled Wednesday night.

The loop ramp from westbound County Road 10 to southbound Highway 65 will also be closed during the work. The ramp from southbound Highway 65 to westbound County Road 10 will remain open.

Motorists traveling southbound will be directed west on County Road 10, south on Highway 47, also known as University Avenue, east on Interstate 694 and then north on Highway 65 to return to the highway south of the work area.

MnDOT said crews have already removed a damaged outside bridge girder and the section of bridge deck above it, installed a replacement girder and begun constructing temporary support beneath the bridge.

The temporary structure, known as falsework, protects traffic below while crews work on the new bridge girder and deck.

The repair project dates to October 28, 2025, when a semi-trailer carrying a prefabricated pedestrian bridge struck the westbound County Road 10 bridge.

The over-height load damaged the outside beam on the north side of the bridge.

The pedestrian bridge being transported at the time was headed south on Highway 65 for installation at a new pedestrian crossing over Coon Rapids Boulevard in Coon Rapids.

The collision has kept the loop ramp from northbound Highway 65 to westbound County Road 10 closed since last October.

MnDOT expects crews, weather permitting, to pour the new bridge deck during a weekend in mid-September.

Repairs are expected to continue through late fall.

The Highway 65 work is not the only traffic change North Metro motorists will encounter this month.

In Blaine, Anoka County is preparing to move its 109th Avenue and Radisson Road intersection improvement project into its second major construction stage beginning Tuesday, September 8.

Radisson Road, also designated County State Aid Highway 52, is scheduled to reopen to northbound and southbound traffic that day.

At the same time, 109th Avenue, County State Aid Highway 12, will close on both sides of Radisson Road.

The closure will extend from Mankato Street to Radisson Road on the west side of the intersection and from Radisson Road to Town Square Drive on the east.

Anoka County said that configuration is expected to remain in place through October.

The project includes replacement of the intersection's traffic signal system and other safety improvements.

Recent work has included pavement patching, installation of new concrete curb, drilling foundations for signal equipment and installing detection systems for the new traffic signals.

Crews are also scheduled to remove and replace the upper two inches of pavement and install new pavement markings as construction advances.

The stage change means motorists who have become accustomed to restrictions on Radisson Road will see that roadway reopen, while east-west traffic on 109th Avenue will face a new interruption.

Drivers should expect detours, reduced access and changing traffic patterns around the intersection while the work continues.

Both projects form part of a busy late-summer construction period across Anoka County and the North Metro.

MnDOT cautions that construction schedules and closure times remain weather dependent and can change.

Motorists traveling through Spring Lake Park Thursday night should plan for the signed Highway 65 detour, while drivers who regularly use 109th Avenue in Blaine should begin preparing for the September 8 closure.
