The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating after a Saint Paul police officer shot a man whom authorities say pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers while fleeing near Regions Hospital.

SAINT PAUL, MN (August 11, 2026) A Saint Paul police officer shot and injured an armed domestic-assault suspect outside Regions Hospital Monday morning after authorities say the man pointed what appeared to be a handgun directly at pursuing officers.

The confrontation began at approximately 9:15 a.m. when Saint Paul police responded to a reported domestic assault in the 400 block of Temperance Street, according to information released by the department.

Officers learned that the suspect had left the location and was believed to be carrying a firearm.

Saint Paul officers and Ramsey County sheriff’s deputies located the man nearby at East 12th and Jackson streets, on or near the Regions Hospital campus. Police said the man ran when officers approached him.

During the foot pursuit, the man allegedly produced what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it toward the officers. One Saint Paul police officer fired, striking the man in his hand and back.

Officers provided emergency medical assistance before taking the man into Regions Hospital for treatment. Police described his injuries as non-life-threatening.

No officers or bystanders were reported injured.

State investigation underway

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been asked to investigate the shooting. That is the customary procedure when a Minnesota law-enforcement officer uses deadly force.

The BCA investigation is expected to examine available body-camera recordings, surveillance video, physical evidence, witness accounts and the actions of the officers and suspect.

The agency will determine the sequence of events and whether the evidence supports the police department’s preliminary account. Once completed, the investigative findings could be forwarded to a prosecuting authority for review.

Authorities had not publicly identified the wounded man or the officer who fired as of the latest available report. Police also had not disclosed whether the object described as a handgun had been recovered or confirmed as an operable firearm.

The allegation that the man pointed a weapon at officers is based on the preliminary account provided by law enforcement and has not been independently adjudicated.

Additional information is expected after the BCA completes its initial interviews and evidence review.
