Officers found the man in the front yard of a south Minneapolis residence Sunday morning. No arrest or information about a possible suspect had been announced. 

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (August 31, 2026)  Minneapolis police are investigating after a man was found fatally stabbed in the front yard of a residence on Portland Avenue Sunday morning.

Officers were called to the 4200 block of Portland Avenue at approximately 6:45 a.m. following a report concerning an injured or unresponsive person.

Police found an adult man in the yard with an apparent stab wound. He was pronounced dead despite the emergency response.

Authorities had not announced an arrest or released information about a possible suspect as of the initial public report.

Homicide Investigation Begins

The location where a person is discovered does not necessarily establish where an assault began.

Investigators will need to determine whether the stabbing occurred in the yard, inside a nearby residence, on the sidewalk or at another location before the victim reached the property.

Detectives are expected to review nearby surveillance and doorbell-camera footage, examine physical evidence and speak with residents who may have seen or heard activity during the overnight and early-morning hours.

Investigators may also examine emergency calls, telephone records and the victim’s recent contacts as they attempt to establish a chronology.

Police have not said whether the victim lived at the residence, was visiting someone in the neighborhood or had any known connection to the property where he was found.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office is responsible for confirming the victim’s identity and determining the official cause and manner of death.

Police may withhold a victim’s name until relatives have been notified. The medical examiner’s findings may also clarify the nature and number of injuries.

A police description of an apparent stabbing is an initial investigative assessment. The medical examiner provides the formal determination after examining the evidence and completing an autopsy when necessary.

Police had not provided a suspect description, possible motive or information indicating whether investigators believed the victim knew the person responsible.
