MINNEAPOLIMEDIA UPDATE | State Fair Attendance Remains Strong Saturday After Two Record-Breaking Days

Official attendance reached 198,842 on the fair’s first Saturday, ending the two-day record streak but leaving the 2026 fair well ahead of recent opening-weekend totals.  

FALCON HEIGHTS, MN (August 31, 2026)  Minnesota State Fair attendance remained strong Saturday, although the fair’s record-breaking streak ended after two extraordinary opening days.

The Minnesota State Fair reported that 198,842 people entered the grounds Saturday.

That was 21 fewer visitors than the comparable Saturday in 2025, when attendance reached 198,863. It was also below the first-Saturday record of 222,194 established in 2018.

The official figure corrects preliminary suggestions that Saturday might produce a third consecutive attendance record.

Two Records Still Established

The 2026 fair began with consecutive daily records.

Opening Day attendance reached 155,185 on Thursday, surpassing the previous opening-day record of 138,875 established in 2024.

Friday attendance climbed to 204,065, breaking the previous first-Friday record of 171,233, also established in 2024.

Combined attendance during the first three days reached 558,092.

That was 68,093 more visitors than the first three days of the 2025 fair, when combined attendance totaled 489,999.

The difference was created almost entirely by the record Thursday and Friday crowds.

Saturday Came Close to 2025

Although Saturday did not set a record, its attendance was effectively even with the previous year.

The difference of 21 people represents approximately one-hundredth of 1 percent of Saturday attendance.

The result suggests that crowds remained substantial even after the exceptionally busy opening days.

Saturday’s total was also 14,278 higher than the corresponding day in 2024, when 184,564 visitors attended.

Why Daily Attendance Matters

Daily attendance affects transportation demand, vendor operations, emergency planning, sanitation, staffing and pedestrian movement throughout the fairgrounds.

Large crowds can produce longer waits at food stands, exhibit buildings, restrooms, transportation stops and popular attractions.

Attendance also has financial consequences for independent vendors, concession operators and organizations that depend on the 12-day fair for a significant portion of their annual revenue.

High attendance does not reveal how much each visitor spends, but it expands the potential customer base for food, merchandise, rides and ticketed attractions.

Opening Weekend Continues

The fair’s official attendance figures are released the following day, generally between noon and 3 p.m.

Sunday’s verified count will determine whether the first weekend continued the strong opening pattern. The first-Sunday record is 209,969, established in 1994.

Weather, transportation access, major entertainment and the calendar can all influence daily totals.

The fair continues through Labor Day, September 7.

Monday includes Senior Day discounts and sensory-friendly hours at the Kidway and Mighty Midway. Visitors should consult the fair’s schedule and transportation information before traveling.
