Saint Paul police are investigating the death of 61-year-old Isaiah J. Wilson, who died four days after suffering a head injury during an apparent assault near Dorothy Day Place.
SAINT PAUL, MN (August 12, 2026) Saint Paul police are investigating a downtown assault as a homicide after a 61-year-old man died from injuries he suffered near Dorothy Day Place.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Isaiah J. Wilson of Saint Paul.
Officers were called shortly after 6 p.m. August 3 to the 400 block of Dorothy Day Place, where paramedics were treating Wilson for a serious head injury.
Wilson was transported to Regions Hospital with injuries described as life-threatening. He died August 7, four days after the assault.
Police said preliminary information indicates that someone may have punched Wilson, causing him to fall and strike his head on the sidewalk.
The circumstances leading to the reported confrontation have not been disclosed.
No arrests announced
No arrest had been made as of the latest public report.
Investigators have not released a description of a suspect or said whether Wilson and the person who allegedly struck him knew each other.
The location is near the Dorothy Day Center, part of Catholic Charities Twin Cities’ downtown Saint Paul campus serving people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. Police have not said whether Wilson was using services at the center when the incident occurred.
The case is being investigated as Saint Paul’s 13th homicide of 2026.
A homicide classification means that another person’s actions caused the death. It does not independently determine whether prosecutors will file murder, manslaughter or another criminal charge. That decision depends on the evidence and circumstances established during the investigation.
Investigators will likely rely on witness statements, nearby surveillance recordings, medical findings and any physical evidence recovered from the area.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine Wilson’s official cause and manner of death.

Saint Paul police are asking anyone who saw the assault or has information about the person responsible to contact investigators at 651-266-5650.
People who were near Dorothy Day Place on the evening of August 3 may possess information even if they did not witness the entire encounter. Photographs, recordings or observations of people leaving the area could assist detectives.
Information released during an active homicide investigation may change as police receive additional evidence and interview witnesses.
