Coon Rapids residents have until Friday, August 14, to donate qualifying school supplies and gently used clothing ahead of a community swap at the Coon Rapids Civic Center. Donations will not be accepted on the day of the event.

COON RAPIDS, MN (August 12, 2026)  The City of Coon Rapids is collecting school supplies and gently used children’s clothing this week for a community swap designed to help families prepare for the coming school year while keeping usable items out of landfills.

The School Supply and Kids Clothes Swap will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, August 16, at the Coon Rapids Civic Center, 11155 Robinson Drive NW.

Items must be delivered in advance to the Coon Rapids Recycling Center, 1827 111th Avenue NW. The city will not accept donations at the Civic Center on the day of the swap.

The remaining donation schedule is:

  • Thursday, August 13: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Friday, August 14: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Each donor may bring no more than four bags.

Accepted school supplies include notebooks, loose lined paper, graph paper, folders, three-ring binders, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, erasers, scissors, glue, rulers, protractors, compasses, paints, paintbrushes, backpacks and lunchboxes.

All supplies must be clean and usable. Notebooks must have their used pages removed, and more than half of their pages must remain blank. Boxes of crayons and markers must be at least half full. Paint containers must also be at least half full, and paintbrushes must be clean.

The Recycling Center is also accepting new classroom donations, including facial tissue, paper towels, hand sanitizer and wipes.

Clothing must be clean, gently used and free from stains, rips, tears, broken zippers and missing buttons. Donors must fold and sort clothing by size and gender before bringing it to the Recycling Center. Bags containing unfolded or unsorted clothing will be refused.

Undergarments, socks and accessories will not be accepted. The city also prohibits personalized or company-branded clothing, although apparel featuring sports logos or school mascots is permitted. Event organizers reserve the right to refuse clothing with inappropriate designs.
