MINNEAPOLIMEDIA UPDATE | Saint Paul Police Release Video of Regions Hospital Officer-Involved Shooting

Body-camera and surveillance recordings show the August 10 confrontation in which an officer shot a domestic-assault suspect carrying what police later identified as a replica BB gun. 

SAINT PAUL, MN (August 30, 2026)  Saint Paul police have released body-camera and surveillance footage showing the confrontation outside Regions Hospital in which an officer shot and wounded a domestic-assault suspect earlier this month.

The August 10 shooting occurred after officers responded to a reported domestic assault and encountered the suspect near a hospital entrance.

The newly released body-camera recording captures an officer shouting, “He’s got a gun,” immediately before shots were fired.

Surveillance footage shows the suspect near the hospital doors and documents portions of the confrontation near landscaping outside the building.

Police said the man pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officer.

Investigators later identified the object as a replica Glock-style BB gun.

Suspect Survived Shooting

The suspect was struck by police gunfire and transported for medical treatment.

Authorities described his injuries as non-life-threatening. No other patients, hospital employees, visitors or officers were reported injured.

The officer who fired was identified as Jacob Pederson, a Saint Paul police officer with approximately 12 years of law-enforcement experience.

Pederson was placed on critical-incident leave following the shooting, which is standard procedure after an officer uses deadly force.

Video Provides Additional Evidence

The footage gives the public a clearer view of the moments surrounding the shooting, but it does not constitute the final investigative finding.

Body-camera video may not capture everything an officer or witness could see. Camera position, movement, sound, distance and obstructions can affect what appears in a recording.

Surveillance video can provide a wider view but may lack audio or a clear angle on individual movements.

Investigators will evaluate the recordings alongside witness statements, physical evidence, medical information and the officers’ accounts.

BCA Investigation Remains Open

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer’s use of force.

After completing its investigation, the BCA may submit the case to prosecutors for review. Prosecutors would then determine whether the officer’s actions were legally justified under Minnesota law.

An officer may use deadly force only under circumstances defined by state law, including situations involving an imminent threat of death or great bodily harm.

The fact that the object was later determined to be a BB gun will be considered alongside what the officer knew and reasonably perceived at the moment force was used.

The BCA investigation had not reached a final conclusion when this update was prepared.
