MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Body-Camera Video and 911 Calls Reveal Chaos as Minneapolis Officers Were Shot
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (September 17, 2026). Newly released body-camera recordings, surveillance video and emergency-call transcripts provide the most detailed public reconstruction yet of the September 2 mass shooting at a Loring Park apartment complex.
Authorities say Carlton Johnson killed residents Muse Afrah and Dale Henry Spry and wounded five other people before Minneapolis police officers fatally shot him.
The injured included Minneapolis officers Joseph Michnowski and Yahye Mahmed Ahmed, Johnson’s former partner and two building employees.
The newly released material shows officers entering and moving through the apartment building while residents remained trapped inside units and emergency dispatchers attempted to determine the gunman’s location.
Johnson was concealed in a hallway when he fired at responding officers, according to the evidence. Michnowski and Ahmed were wounded during the confrontation. Other officers returned fire and killed Johnson.
The 911 records capture residents reporting gunfire, injured people and uncertainty about whether they could safely leave their apartments. The calls also document the difficulty authorities faced in locating the shooter while attempting to reach victims.
Records examined after the attack indicate Johnson had previously been accused of threatening people and displaying a firearm. He was also facing eviction. No criminal charges had been filed against him before the September shooting.
The shooting itself was previously reported. The release of the recordings and transcripts is a substantial new development because the evidence establishes a clearer sequence of events and provides a basis for reviewing the police response and the officers’ use of deadly force.
