Monday Storm Set To Bring Measurable Snow To Twin Cities, Southern MN

The first of three winter storm systems that could hit Minnesota this week has a chance of bringing measurable snow – albeit a small amount – to the Twin Cities on Monday.

The system is expected to arrive early Monday and continue through Tuesday, with snow slowly accumulating over a 36-hour period, with western and southern Minnesota set to see the highest amounts.

As of Sunday, the National Weather Service is predicting a 39% chance of 2-or-more inches of snow in the Twin Cities, though the chances are higher in the south and west metro.

More likely to see more than 2 inches of snow is southwestern and southern Minnesota, with Madison, Marshall, Fairmont and Redwood Falls among the cities likely to see heavier snow.

The NWS's current prediction for snow in the Twin Cities ranges anywhere from trace to 3 inches, so it could a real boom-or-bust depending on where you live in the metro, and depending on how the system develops throughout Sunday.

But predictions are more certain for southwestern Minnesota, with some parts of the state potentially seeing anything from 4-7 inches of snow, which would represent the biggest snowfall so far in those regions this winter.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for far southwestern Minnesota.

Per the NWS forecast discussion: "Accumulations of 3-5 inches are possible in portions of western and southern Minnesota, with 1-2 inches around the Twin Cities and lower amounts between the Twin Cities and Duluth, where the forcing will be weakest.

"While this is a decent amount of snow, it will fall over a 30-36 hour period which should help keep impacts to travel on the lower end overall."

Two more chances of snow could follow later in the week, before temperatures plunge next weekend into the single digits in the Twin Cities, which could see its first sub-zero reading of the winter.
