New Hope Council Member John Elder Announces Run For Mayor

Longtime New Hope City Council member John Elder has announced a run for mayor in the upcoming November election.

Elder has served on the council since 2008.

“It has truly been an honor for me to serve on the New Hope City Council for the past 16 years,” said Elder in a statement. “I have the knowledge, passion and desire to continue serving as mayor.”

New Hope’s current mayor, Kathi Hemken, who has served since 2009, announced late last year in an interview with CCX News that she was not running for re-election.

Elder has worked in law enforcement for 30 years. He is currently a captain with the Robbinsdale Police Department. Previous law enforcement agencies he has worked for include the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Lakeville, New Hope and Minneapolis police departments.

If elected mayor, Elder says he wants to focus on emergency services, housing stock and taxation.

Among his volunteering roles, Elder conducts hostage and crisis training with the New Hope Police Explorers, serves on the Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission and has been active with local youth soccer clubs.

Elder and his wife have lived in New Hope for more than 25 years and raised three children.
