Coon Rapids, MN – July 29, 2025 – The Walmart store in Coon Rapids is slated to close its doors permanently on August 29, 2025, a decision the retail giant attributes to a comprehensive review of "customer needs, financial performance, and the proximity of other nearby stores." This closure follows the trend of another north Twin Cities metro Walmart, which ceased operations in Brooklyn Center in 2023.
The Coon Rapids location, situated on Riverdale Drive in the city's northwest corner, does not feature a full grocery department, unlike many of Walmart's Supercenters. This distinction, among other factors, contributed to the company's decision.
Approximately 180 employees at the Coon Rapids store will be offered opportunities to transfer to other Walmart locations. The retail chain has several other stores within a 10-mile radius, including those in Brooklyn Park, Blaine, and Andover, all of which are scheduled for upgrades this year. Pharmacy customers will have their prescriptions automatically transferred when the store closes.
While Walmart states it continues to invest in its 4,600 U.S. brick-and-mortar stores, having spent nearly $200 million on upgrades across Minnesota over the past five years, the closure of the Coon Rapids location underscores ongoing strategic adjustments within the retail sector. The company expressed gratitude to its customers in Coon Rapids for their patronage.
The closure of a major retailer like Walmart can have various impacts on a community, including potential job displacement, shifts in local business dynamics, and changes in property values. However, such events can also spur community-led revitalization efforts and encourage the emergence of new businesses tailored to local needs.
