Over 16,000 Minnesota Residents Enroll In Tuition-Free College As North Star Promise Scholarship Gains Traction
The North Star Promise Scholarship, an initiative to provide tuition-free college to Minnesota residents, has already seen enrollment of over 16,000 students at public colleges this fall. With the campaign's success, anticipation is high for an increase in participation in the forthcoming years, as awareness continues to grow.
BBAY has expressed gratitude to the Free College Campaign Coalition members and Task Force for their collaborative efforts, although BBAY's campaign is wrapping up, the endeavor towards expanding college and career access remains steadfast. BBAY has collaborated with The Linden Group, rolling out seven videos in English, Spanish, and Hmong — aimed at disseminating information on the scholarship to Brooklyn's diverse population. These videos, now live on the Free College Campaign site and BBAY's social media platforms, are there to inform about the available educational financial aid and supporters are encouraged to share or repost these videos to help spread the word.
The call to action continues with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2025-2026 academic year now open. Prospective students are advised to prepare by creating a StudentAid.gov account, gathering necessary documents, and determining dependency status. College Possible, noted for offering support to students completing their FAFSA or MN Dream Act applications, stands ready to schedule appointments for one-on-one help.
Last but not least, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) shed light on the experiences of seven North Star Promise scholars, including three with connections to Brooklyn Park or Brooklyn Center, as reported last month. The article shared personal accounts of students who have seen doors open to college and career paths thanks to the scholarship. As one interviewee put it, "thank you for sharing your stories and how this opportunity has opened doors for you to college & career pathways!" underscoring the profound impact of the scholarship initiative on individual lives.
