MINNEAPOLIS, MN – June 28, 2025 – In a display of profound sympathy and support, former President Joe Biden made a private visit to Senator John Hoffman at a Twin Cities hospital on Friday. The visit came during a somber trip to Minnesota, where the former president also paid his respects to the late State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who tragically died in a recent shooting.
Senator Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also victims of the same violent incident on June 14, which authorities have described as politically motivated. While Yvette Hoffman has since been released, Senator Hoffman remains hospitalized, recovering from multiple gunshot wounds.
According to a statement shared by Yvette Hoffman, Senator Hoffman's condition continues to improve. She reported that he is "alert, he's been up walking around and is able to eat," and even quipped that he is "giving the State Troopers guarding him some grief," indicating a positive spirit despite his ordeal. A photo shared by the Hoffman family showed the former president smiling alongside Senator Hoffman, Yvette, and their daughter, Hope, during the hospital visit.
Earlier in the day, former President Biden joined thousands of Minnesotans at the State Capitol in St. Paul to honor Representative Hortman and her husband, Mark, as they lay in state. The couple, along with their golden retriever Gilbert, were killed in their Brooklyn Park home. Representative Hortman made history as the first woman to lie in state at the Minnesota Capitol, an honor rarely bestowed.
The former president, a Catholic, was seen observing a moment of quiet reflection before the caskets, making the sign of the cross and kneeling. His visit underscores the deep impact of these tragic events on both a personal and political level.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is also expected to attend the private funeral service for the Hortmans on Saturday, which will be livestreamed on the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's YouTube page. The suspect in the attacks, Vance Boelter, has been charged with murder in the deaths of the Hortmans and attempted murder in the shootings of Senator and Mrs. Hoffman.
The events have united Minnesotans in grief and solidarity, with leaders across the state expressing condolences and calling for civility. Former President Biden's visit offers a moment of comfort and national acknowledgment of the profound loss and challenges facing the state.
