Anoka County Invites Public To Open House For New Coon Lake Shop In Columbus

COLUMBUS, MN – July 29, 2025 – Anoka County is extending an invitation to the public for an open house celebrating the grand opening of its new Coon Lake Shop. The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the newly constructed facility located at 5510 197th Ave NW in Columbus.

This open house offers a unique opportunity for residents to explore the state-of-the-art facility, meet the dedicated team who will operate it, and gain insight into the essential services it will support for the county. Guided tours of the shop will be available throughout the event, providing a behind-the-scenes look at its operations. Light refreshments will also be provided for attendees.

The Coon Lake Shop is a crucial addition to Anoka County's Public Works infrastructure, specifically serving as a vital hub for both Highway and Parks departments. In the winter months, it will house Highway staff and equipment, including trucks and loaders, to facilitate snow plowing and other winter maintenance operations for the "East Side" of the county. During the warmer months, from April to October, the shop will transition to support Parks staff responsible for maintaining Coon Lake County Park, Martin-Island-Linwood Regional Park, and the Sandhill Crane Natural Area.

The new facility is designed to enhance efficiency and provide adequate space for equipment and supplies, addressing previous challenges with an older, deteriorating shop that no longer met the county's needs. The improved space aims to streamline operations, reduce travel time for staff, and ultimately better serve the maintenance demands of the county's parks and roadways in the eastern region.
