Coon Rapids 2025 Construction Season Progresses; Key Projects Nearing October Completion
COON RAPIDS, MN — From new streets to safer sewers and expanded trail access, construction season in Coon Rapids is reshaping neighborhoods and community spaces as the City’s 2025 construction program moves forward. Several projects are on track to wrap up by the end of October, bringing long-term benefits for residents and visitors alike.
Rebuilding Neighborhood Streets
The 2025 Street Reconstruction Project (25-1) covers 3.9 miles of roadway across three residential neighborhoods: Oaks of Shenandoah, Thousand Oaks, and Thrush Park.
Completed Work: Crews have finished reconstruction in the Oaks of Shenandoah and Thrush Park neighborhoods, giving residents smoother, safer roads. Homeowners in these areas are encouraged to run their irrigation systems and report any issues to the City.
What’s Next: Work now shifts to the Thousand Oaks neighborhood, where concrete repairs, irrigation fixes, boulevard restoration, and driveway patching are scheduled.
“Street reconstruction may feel like an inconvenience in the short term, but these improvements extend the life of our infrastructure and improve daily quality of life for residents,” City officials noted.
Protecting Public Health Through Sewer Upgrades
The Sewer Lining Project (25-4) targets large-diameter sewers along Mississippi Boulevard and parts of Hanson Boulevard, reinforcing infrastructure critical to public health and environmental safety.
Why It Matters: By extending the life of existing pipes, the project reduces the risk of sewer failures and protects groundwater resources.
Traffic Impacts: Temporary above-ground bypass systems and short detours will be in place while crews work.
Timeline: Work on Hanson Boulevard continues next week, with periodic Saturday shifts. Final restoration is expected by late October.
Expanding Safe, Walkable Connections
The long-awaited Coon Creek Regional Trail pedestrian bridge (Project 24-6) is taking shape over Coon Rapids Boulevard northwest of Zilla Street.
Progress: Construction of abutment piers, approach spans, and retaining walls is underway. On September 26, crews poured the north side approach spans, a major milestone.
What’s Next: Railings will be installed once the concrete has cured, while painting continues on the south side spans.
Completion: The bridge is slated to open by the end of October, creating a safer crossing for walkers, runners, and cyclists, and enhancing regional trail connectivity.
Regional Transportation Improvements
Coon Rapids residents will also notice progress on regional roadways:
Anoka County Projects: Mill and overlay resurfacing on Northdale Boulevard and University Avenue, plus new traffic signals at Northdale Boulevard/111th Lane and Northdale Boulevard/University Avenue, are expected to improve traffic flow and safety.
MnDOT Projects: The Highway 10 expansion between Creek Meadow Drive and Round Lake Boulevard continues to move forward, a major project aimed at reducing congestion and improving commuter reliability.
