COON RAPIDS, Minn. — City Hall and the Coon Rapids Police Department are illuminated in purple this October, joining a countywide effort to raise awareness of domestic violence and support survivors.
The initiative is part of Alexandra House’s annual Purple Lights Campaign, which calls on individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout Anoka County to display purple porch lights, window displays, and building illuminations during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The purple lights serve as a powerful reminder of lives lost to domestic violence and as a tribute to the strength and resilience of survivors.
“Lighting our community in purple shines a visible light on an issue that too often remains hidden,” said organizers at Alexandra House, a nonprofit based in Anoka County that provides emergency shelter, advocacy, and support services for those affected by domestic and sexual violence. The campaign also raises critical funds to sustain the organization’s programs.
Earlier this fall, the Anoka County Board adopted a resolution proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, underscoring the county’s commitment to combating domestic abuse and honoring victims and survivors. Municipal buildings across Anoka County — including in Coon Rapids — are now glowing purple as part of that commitment.
Local leaders and service providers encourage residents to join the effort by changing exterior bulbs to purple, lighting windows, or displaying Alexandra House yard signs. These simple but visible actions foster community solidarity and help spark conversations around prevention, safety, and support.
