Coon Rapids City Launches Major Fall Street Sweeping Initiative; Residents Urged to Assist Crews

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The City of Coon Rapids has kicked off its annual fall street sweeping program, an extensive cleanup effort that began this week and will continue through Thanksgiving, according to the city’s Public Works Department.

Crews plan to sweep every street in the city two to three times before the program concludes. Officials note that if an area is missed during the first pass, residents can expect sweepers to return for additional rounds to ensure a thorough cleanup ahead of the winter season.

Resident Cooperation Requested

City officials are asking for residents’ cooperation to help ensure the sweeping process runs efficiently. All items—including waste and recycling bins, basketball hoops, and other personal belongings—should be kept behind the curb and out of the street.

In addition, the City reminds residents that it is against City Code to sweep or blow leaves, grass clippings, or other yard waste into the street. Such materials can clog storm drains and diminish the efficiency of sweepers, which are primarily designed to remove sand, dirt, and other fine debris.

Temporary Brown Water Possible

The sweeping process also requires the use of fire hydrants to refill water tanks on the sweepers. When hydrants are opened, air may enter the water system and stir up naturally occurring iron sediment, sometimes resulting in temporary brown or discolored water.

While the discoloration may appear concerning, the City assures residents that the water remains safe to drink. Officials recommend avoiding laundry—especially washing white clothing—until the water clears, which typically occurs within a day. The use of a water softener may help reduce any discoloration.

Commitment to Clean Streets and Environmental Care

City leaders emphasize that fall sweeping plays a vital role not only in maintaining clean streets but also in protecting local waterways. Removing debris and sediment before snowfall helps prevent pollution from reaching storm drains and rivers during spring runoff.
