BLAINE, Minn. — Officers from the Blaine Police Department (BPD) brought unexpected holiday cheer to grocery shoppers this week through an initiative called “Groceries with Guardians.”
At the Walmart Supercenter on 11505 Ulysses St. NE, Blaine officers surprised shoppers by offering gift cards to help cover portions of their grocery bills. There were no signups, no income verification, and no eligibility requirements — just spontaneous acts of kindness.
The event was made possible through a community grant awarded by Walmart, likely via its Spark Good Local Grants program, which supports local organizations, including first responders, in delivering unique community initiatives.
“Groceries with Guardians” reflects Blaine PD’s broader mission-driven approach to community engagement. In a recent statement regarding the department’s “Season of Thanks”, Blaine officers emphasized their role as community partners, not just responders.
This outreach aligns with existing programs led by Blaine PD’s Community Outreach Unit, including Night to Unite, Safety Camp, and Coffee with a Cop, which aim to build trust and foster dialogue in non-emergency settings.
By removing barriers such as paperwork or income verification, the initiative delivered immediate support and a morale boost to shoppers, while exemplifying the principles of relational policing, where positive, informal interactions strengthen public trust in law enforcement.

Blaine PD expressed gratitude to Walmart and the community for making the event possible. “This isn’t about press — it’s about showing up for people,” a department spokesperson said.
As the department continues its mission-driven efforts, “Groceries with Guardians” stands as a compelling example of how law enforcement can provide meaningful, compassionate service to the community.
