MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Anoka County to Offer Free Legal Services at Annual Law Day Event May 1
ANOKA, MN (May 1, 2026) Anoka County will host its annual Law Day event today, Friday, May 1, offering free legal assistance and court-related services to residents at the Anoka County Government Center and Courthouse.
The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 2100 3rd Avenue North, Anoka, MN 55303. All attendees are required to check in at the Government Center atrium upon arrival before accessing individual clinics.
Law Day is part of a national observance established by Congress in 1958 to promote public understanding of the legal system and expand access to justice. In Anoka County, the event is structured as a one-day, service-focused initiative connecting residents with attorneys, court staff, and legal service providers at no cost.
Legal Clinics and Services
A range of legal services will be available, with a combination of appointment-based and walk-in clinics:
- Family Law: Consultations on child support, custody, parenting time, paternity, divorce, and domestic violence. Appointments recommended.
- Civil Clinic: Assistance with debt collection, garnishments, Social Security disability, power of attorney, and guardianships. Appointments recommended.
- Driver’s License Clinic: Support for license reinstatement, compliance requirements, and repayment plans. Appointments recommended.
- Unpaid Fines Clinic: Opportunities to meet with attorneys to address and potentially combine or resolve outstanding fines and fees. Appointments recommended.
- Housing Clinic: Guidance for tenants on eviction proceedings, repairs, security deposits, and lockouts. Walk-in available.
- Criminal Expungement: Assistance with sealing eligible criminal records within Anoka County. Walk-in available.
- Warrant Resolution: Help resolving active warrants for qualifying misdemeanor and low-level felony cases. Walk-in available.
County officials advise scheduling appointments in advance for higher-demand clinics, particularly family law, civil matters, driver’s license issues, and unpaid fines, to reduce wait times and ensure availability.
Additional Services and Access
Language interpretation services will be available upon request. Residents seeking interpretation are encouraged to request assistance when scheduling appointments.
Attendees may also apply for a public defender in advance of the event to allow for preliminary case review where applicable.
In addition to legal services, the event may include courthouse tours, informational sessions with district court representatives, and community engagement activities, including demonstrations by the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.
Attendance Guidance
Officials recommend arriving early, as clinic capacity may be reached before the scheduled end time. The event is open to all residents regardless of income and is intended to provide immediate, practical legal guidance in a single-day setting.
