COON RAPIDS, MN (May 30, 2026) Families across the Coon Rapids area will have an opportunity Saturday morning to combine outdoor recreation with hands-on safety education as the Coon Rapids Police Department hosts its annual Bike Rodeo at Lions Coon Creek Park.

The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Lions Coon Creek Park, located at 11861 Hanson Boulevard NW, and is designed to help children develop safe bicycling habits before the start of the busy summer riding season.

Organized by the Coon Rapids Police Department, the Bike Rodeo provides young riders with practical instruction on bicycle operation, traffic awareness, helmet safety, and accident prevention through a series of interactive learning stations and riding exercises.

Police officers and community volunteers will guide participants through bicycle safety fundamentals, including proper starting and stopping techniques, obstacle avoidance, hand signals, and safe riding practices around pedestrians, vehicles, and other cyclists.

Children attending the event will also have the opportunity to test their skills on an obstacle course specifically designed to simulate common riding situations and help reinforce safe decision-making while riding.

A key component of the event is bicycle fit and helmet education.

Officers will provide bicycle fit checks to help ensure children are riding bicycles that are properly sized and adjusted for their height and ability level. Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has consistently shown that properly fitted bicycles and helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious injury during crashes.

The event will also include helmet fitting assistance, and bicycle helmets will be available for purchase. Safety experts continue to emphasize helmet use as one of the most effective ways to prevent severe head injuries among young cyclists.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, hundreds of bicyclists are killed and tens of thousands are injured annually in traffic-related crashes across the United States. Children and younger riders remain particularly vulnerable when proper safety practices are not followed.

Local law enforcement officials view programs such as the Bike Rodeo as an important investment in prevention.

Rather than focusing solely on enforcement, the event allows officers to engage directly with children and families in a positive educational environment while teaching skills that can help prevent accidents before they occur.

The program also comes as communities across Minnesota continue to encourage outdoor recreation and active transportation options during the summer months. Parks, trails, neighborhood streets, and regional trail systems typically experience significantly higher bicycle traffic between Memorial Day and Labor Day, making safety education particularly timely.

The Bike Rodeo is one of several seasonal public safety initiatives supported by the City of Coon Rapids. Community engagement efforts throughout the summer also include safety camps, neighborhood outreach programs, and preparation for National Night Out, known in Minnesota as Night to Unite.

City officials are currently encouraging neighborhood groups to begin registering for this year's Night to Unite celebrations, which bring residents and public safety personnel together to strengthen neighborhood relationships, promote crime prevention awareness, and build community connections.

Saturday's Bike Rodeo requires no advance registration, and participation is open to the public.

Families are encouraged to bring their bicycles and existing helmets for inspection and fitting assistance. Participants will have the opportunity to practice riding skills, learn essential safety techniques, and interact with local police officers in a family-friendly setting designed to make summer bicycling safer for everyone.
