COON RAPIDS, MN (July 20, 2026) Neighborhoods across Coon Rapids are preparing to gather Tuesday, August 4, for Night to Unite, an annual community-building event designed to strengthen relationships among residents, police officers, firefighters and other public-safety personnel.

Registered neighborhood celebrations will take place between 5 and 8:30 p.m. throughout the city.

Registration for residents seeking official police or fire department visits closed July 10. However, residents who do not have a registered gathering in their neighborhood can still participate in a community party at Lions Coon Creek Park.

The public gathering will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the park, located at 11861 Hanson Boulevard.

Community Party Open to Residents

The Coon Rapids Lions Club will provide hot dogs, chips and water during the Lions Coon Creek Park gathering.

Residents will have an opportunity to meet police officers, examine squad cars and see equipment used by the Coon Rapids Police Department. Giveaways will also be available.

The community gathering gives apartment residents, newcomers and people without an organized block party an opportunity to participate in the citywide event.

No neighborhood registration is required to attend the Lions Coon Creek Park gathering.

Registered Parties Await Public-Safety Visits

Neighborhoods that registered before the July 10 deadline were placed on the city’s list for potential visits from police officers, firefighters and other city representatives.

City officials have cautioned in previous years that emergency calls remain the first responsibility of public-safety personnel. The timing and length of neighborhood visits can therefore vary depending on police and fire activity that evening.

Registered party organizers will be eligible to receive bags containing giveaways and crime-prevention information. The bags will be available at the Coon Rapids Police Department beginning Monday, July 27.

Police Chief Brad Steiner told the City Council that considerable planning takes place behind the scenes and that the department expects strong participation this year.

Building Connections Before Emergencies

Night to Unite is intended to help neighbors become familiar with one another before an emergency or public-safety problem occurs.

Those connections can become especially valuable when residents need to identify unusual activity, locate a missing child, assist an older neighbor or share important information during severe weather.

The gatherings also provide an informal setting where residents can ask officers questions about crime prevention, traffic safety, scams and other community concerns.

For police and firefighters, neighborhood parties create opportunities to meet residents outside emergency situations and explain the work of their departments.

Continuing a Community Tradition

Night to Unite is held annually on the first Tuesday in August in communities across Minnesota.

Activities vary by neighborhood and may include cookouts, games, safety demonstrations, children’s activities and informal conversations with city officials.
