MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Second Teen Arrested in Connection With Fatal Brooklyn Park Shooting

BROOKLYN PARK, MN (July 31, 2026). A second teenager has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Hartkopf Park in Brooklyn Park, according to authorities.

The 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody without incident Wednesday in Peoria, Illinois, after Brooklyn Park police investigators obtained a murder warrant from a Hennepin County judge.

The United States Marshals Service assisted with the arrest.

The teenager is being held at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center while awaiting extradition to Minnesota.

The shooting occurred shortly before 10:45 p.m. July 5 at Hartkopf Park, 7300 Florida Avenue North.

Brooklyn Park officers responding to reports of gunfire found a 16-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Officers attempted lifesaving measures, but the teenager died.

Police have not publicly identified the victim or announced a possible motive.

Investigators arrested another 17-year-old boy July 8 on probable cause of second-degree murder. Police also recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.

The arrest in Illinois means two teenagers are now in custody in connection with the killing.

Because the suspects are juveniles, authorities may release limited information about their identities and court proceedings. A prosecutor could seek adult certification depending on the allegations, evidence and decisions made in juvenile court, but no such determination should be assumed before it is formally announced.

The investigation remains active.

Police have asked anyone with information that could assist investigators to contact the Brooklyn Park Police Department.
