Tribal leaders say no arrests have been made and there is no known threat to the public while the federal investigation remains undisclosed

RED LAKE, MN (September 12, 2026). Federal agents have executed a search warrant at Red Lake Nation's child-welfare facility, but authorities have not disclosed what investigators were seeking or the nature of the federal investigation.

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Indian Affairs searched Ombimindwaa Gidinawemaaganinaadog, formerly known as Red Lake Family and Children Services, on Thursday.

FBI Supervisory Special Agent Matthew Vogel confirmed that a federal search warrant was executed at the tribal building but declined to provide additional details because the investigation remains active.

The U.S. Attorney's Office also confirmed the search warrant but has not publicly identified suspected offenses or individuals under investigation.

That absence of information is important.

A search warrant authorizes investigators to search a location for evidence based on information presented to a court. It does not establish that an individual or organization has committed a crime.

No arrests had been announced in connection with the search as of the tribal statement, and officials said there was no known threat to the public.

The Red Lake Tribal Council said it was aware of the FBI activity and was cooperating with federal investigators and tribal law-enforcement partners.

Tribal leaders also urged community members to respect the investigative process and avoid spreading unverified information while additional facts remain unavailable. The council said it would provide further information when details could appropriately be shared with the public.

The Tribal Council also emphasized protection of Red Lake Nation's sovereignty during the investigation.

Ombimindwaa Gidinawemaaganinaadog means “uplifting all our relatives” in Ojibwe. The organization was formerly known as Red Lake Family and Children Services and provides child- and family-related services within the Red Lake Nation.

The facility operates from a comparatively new building that opened in 2023.

The lack of information surrounding Thursday's search makes restraint especially important.

There is currently no publicly disclosed basis for concluding that the search concerns any particular employee, program, funding stream, child-welfare case or alleged offense.

Until the FBI, U.S. Attorney's Office or Red Lake Nation releases additional information, assertions about the purpose of the warrant would be speculation.

For now, the verified facts are limited but significant: federal and tribal authorities are cooperating in an active investigation, a warrant was executed at the child-welfare facility, no arrests have been publicly announced, and tribal officials say there is no known public-safety threat.
