Coon Rapids Begins Construction Of $4.6M Pedestrian Bridge To Enhance Public Safety And Trail Connectivity

Work has commenced on a significant addition to Coon Rapids' infrastructure, with construction crews breaking ground on a new $4.6 million pedestrian bridge aimed at enhancing public safety. Spanning over Coon Rapids Boulevard, the bridge is not just a walkway, but a crucial element of the Coon Creek Regional Trail system, which is envisaged to link Zilla Street to its southwest side.

According to a report from the City of Coon Rapids, City Engineer Mark Hansen detailed the project's phases, remarking, "The goal is to get the piers constructed as well as hopefully some of the retaining walls and the approaches.” However, the actual bridges that will connect these piers and the steel truss are scheduled for installation next year. Funded in large part by State and Federal finances, together with contributions from Anoka County, this venture reflects a collaborative investment in local safety and connectivity.

Accessibility stands at the forefront of the design, with Hansen confirming that the pedestrian bridge is designed with a grade that will be able to accommodate wheelchairs and ADA accommodations. To integrate Coon Rapids' identity into the structure, unique design elements will be incorporated. Hansen explained that the bridge railings will have that wave pattern worked in and then the bridge itself the truss that spans across Coon Rapids Boulevard will also have that wave or that Riverwalk theme worked into it.

The City's announcement has stated that laying the bridge across the bustling Coon Rapids Boulevard will necessitate a brief rerouting of traffic, expected to take place for a day or two in late spring of 2025. Upon completion, the pedestrian bridge won't just provide a safe crossing for the city’s residents, it will stand as a distinctive welcoming beacon to all those entering the city.
