Fridley Police Arrest 13-Year-Old In Relation To Alleged Threats That Closed Fridley School On Jan. 15 And 16

On Jan. 14, Fridley Police arrested a 13-year-old male juvenile, in relation to a threat to Fridley district schools, the department posted on its social media page. The juvenile is being held at the Lino Lakes Juvenile Detention Facility.

In response to the threat, Fridley Public Schools canceled all classes and school activities on Jan. 15, FPS announced on its website. The district also canceled secondary afterschool activities and evening meetings on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

"We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause our families," the district posted in its Jan. 14 announcement. "We also encourage everyone to continue speaking up if they see or hear anything that could represent a potential school safety issue."

On Jan. 15, FPS posted that all classes and activities were closed on Thursday, Jan. 16.

The police department posted on Facebook Jan. 15, "As Fridley Public Safety was conducting their investigation of the initial threat, authorities were made aware of additional potential threats on various social media platforms. Detectives are currently investigating every lead received. The investigation is ongoing in collaboration with local, state and federal authorities."

State Sen. Mary Kunesh, DFL-New Brighton, whose district Senate District includes all of Fridley released a statement about the incident on Thursday, Jan. 16:

“I am incredibly thankful for the diligent work of Fridley public school Superintendent Brenda Lewis, school staff, and law enforcement,” she said. “As a former educator, the safety of our students, staff, and neighbors in Fridley is of utmost importance. I am continuing to monitor the situation and wish the students a safe return to school.”

Fridley schools previously planned to have Friday, Jan. 17, as a scheduled day off for the district. Students will return to classes Jan. 21 at the earliest, following Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20.
