COLUMBIA HEIGHTS, MN – Columbia Heights is laying the groundwork for a major investment in youth athletics and community recreation: a new soccer complex at Huset Park.
The City Council, at its May 13 meeting, gave city staff the green light to begin initial planning and feasibility studies for the project, which could result in upgraded playing fields and new amenities to support the city’s growing soccer community. The move follows months of advocacy from local residents, youth sports coaches, and Parks and Recreation leaders seeking safer and more modern facilities for practice and play.
“We’re excited to get the ball rolling on a project that reflects our community’s values and priorities,” said Mayor Amáda Márquez Simula. “This isn’t just about soccer—it’s about creating inclusive spaces where families can gather and young people can grow.”
Currently, Huset Park fields are heavily used by local leagues, school teams, and pick-up players, but aging infrastructure and limited field access have made scheduling difficult. Parks and Recreation Director Jack Broz noted that demand for field time has surged in recent years—particularly among youth and immigrant communities who see soccer as a cultural and communal touchstone.
The proposed upgrades, still in the early stages, could include artificial turf fields, improved drainage, new lighting, expanded spectator seating, and ADA-accessible features. Council members emphasized the importance of community input throughout the planning process.
“Residents will have many opportunities to help shape what this facility becomes,” said Councilmember Rachel James. “This is an investment in our children, our health, and the future of Columbia Heights.”
City staff plan to hold community engagement sessions this summer and fall. A preliminary design and cost estimate is expected by the end of the year, with construction possible in 2026, pending funding approval.
