Coon Rapids Launches "Rec On the Spot" To Bring Free Summer Fun Directly to Youth

COON RAPIDS, MN – June 10, 2025 – The City of Coon Rapids is excited to announce the launch of its "Rec on the Spot" program, a free, mobile recreation initiative designed to bring engaging activities directly to youth and teens aged 5-14 throughout the summer months. Kicking off on Monday, June 9, 2025, the program aims to provide easily accessible, supervised recreation opportunities at various city parks, fostering active lifestyles and community engagement.

"Rec on the Spot" operates as a staffed, mobile recreation unit that makes scheduled stops at designated parks from Monday through Thursday, running until August 14, 2025. Each day features two sessions: a morning session from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and an afternoon session from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It's a convenient drop-in program, meaning no prior registration is required, making it simple for families to participate.

The program's schedule includes rotating park locations to reach a wide array of neighborhoods:

  • Mondays: Thorpe Park (12251 Crooked Lake Blvd.) in the mornings, and Riverview Park (2420 105th Ave.) in the afternoons.
  • Tuesdays: Sand Creek Park (1008 Northdale Blvd.) in the mornings, and Riverview Park (2420 105th Ave.) in the afternoons.
  • Wednesdays: Prairie Oaks Park (1455 127th Ave.) in the mornings, and Riverview Park (2420 105th Ave.) in the afternoons.
  • Thursdays: Woodcrest Park (901 103rd Ave.) in the mornings, and Riverview Park (2420 105th Ave.) in the afternoons.

Participants can expect a diverse range of activities, including large and small group games, arts and crafts, and other engaging options to encourage play and social interaction. It's important to note that while staff provide supervision during designated program times, no supervision is offered before or after these hours.

The "Rec on the Spot" program is proudly sponsored by CharitAbleMN, whose support helps make these free activities possible for Coon Rapids youth. Families are encouraged to follow the City of Coon Rapids' official Facebook page for any weather-related updates or schedule changes.

This initiative by the Coon Rapids Parks and Recreation Department reflects the city's ongoing commitment to providing valuable resources and opportunities for its younger residents, ensuring a summer filled with fun, activity, and new friendships.
