MnDOT traffic switch part of major project to expand highway, ease congestion
COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Eastbound Highway 10 will be reduced to a single lane this weekend between Hanson Boulevard (County Road 78) and Round Lake Boulevard (County Road 9) as part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) ongoing project to expand the congested corridor.
The lane reduction began 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, and continues through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, while crews shift traffic to new lanes and move barriers and equipment. MnDOT has also scheduled brief ramp closures on Sunday morning at key interchanges, including Round Lake Boulevard, Main Street, and Hanson Boulevard.
Following the eastbound work, westbound Highway 10 will be reduced to one lane beginning 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, through noon Tuesday, Aug. 26. Temporary westbound ramp closures at Hanson Boulevard and Main Street are also planned during this time.
MnDOT officials say the weekend closures are tied to a broader improvement project along Highway 10 designed to add a third lane in each direction between Hanson and Round Lake boulevards. The $XX million project—which began in March 2025—is intended to increase traffic capacity, reduce congestion, and improve safety in one of the metro’s busiest commuter corridors.
In addition to widening the highway, the project includes:
Traffic volumes along this stretch of Highway 10 have grown significantly in recent years, often causing backups not just on the highway but also spilling onto local roads. MnDOT says adding lanes will help ease those bottlenecks while supporting continued growth in the north metro.
Construction is expected to continue through fall 2025, with final paving and permanent markings scheduled for completion by June 2026, weather permitting.
MnDOT cautions drivers to plan for delays this weekend, especially with added traffic from the Minnesota State Fair. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes, drive with extra care in the work zone, and check 511mn.org or the 511 mobile app for real-time traffic updates and detour information.
