BLAINE, MN — October 28, 2025 — The Blaine Police Department is today conducting a renewed, targeted distracted driving enforcement operation across the city in response to a recent surge in violations.

Throughout the day, officers are working two consecutive shifts dedicated solely to identifying and stopping drivers who violate Minnesota’s hands-free law.
The initiative follows a noticeable rise in distracted driving cases observed by the department’s Traffic Unit in recent weeks—an increase officials say demanded an immediate, concentrated response.
“Distracted driving continues to endanger everyone on the road,” said a Blaine Police spokesperson. “This enforcement effort isn’t just about citations—it’s about saving lives.”

This operation builds on Blaine Police’s continued commitment to roadway safety, following a high-profile Traffic Safety Week earlier this year that emphasized distracted driving awareness. During that campaign, the department partnered with K102’s Chris Carr & Company to educate drivers about the risks and legal consequences of using a mobile device while driving.

The ultimate goal of today’s operation is simple but vital: to prevent crashes and protect the public. The department urges all residents to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel, reminding drivers that distracted driving—particularly the use of cell phones—remains one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes statewide.

Minnesota’s hands-free law, enacted in 2019, makes it illegal for drivers to hold a phone or any wireless device while operating a vehicle. Violators may face fines, license impacts, and increased insurance costs.

Residents are encouraged to model safe driving habits, stay alert, and eliminate distractions behind the wheel.
