Anoka County’s $300,000 Snowplow Gets a Name: Meet “The Blizzard of Oz”

ANOKA COUNTY, Minn., Nov. 29, 2025 — As Minnesota braces for winter, the Anoka County Transportation Department has added a formidable new tool to its fleet: a $300,000 snowplow unveiled just before Thanksgiving. But this truck is more than just heavy machinery — it carries a name chosen by local residents: “The Blizzard of Oz.”

The moniker comes from the county’s annual “Name the Plow” contest, a tradition dating back to 2004 that officials say predates similar efforts statewide. “We believe we are the original name-your-snow-plow program in Minnesota,” said James Plemon, Senior Manager of Road Maintenance. “We get thousands of entries each year, and it’s always fun to see the community’s creativity.”

A Tradition of Community Engagement

The contest takes place at the county fair, where residents can vote on submitted names. This year, “The Blizzard of Oz” emerged as the top choice. Multiple entrants tied for first place and will receive a four-pack of water-park passes generously donated by the Anoka County Parks Department.

While MnDOT’s statewide snowplow naming contests have garnered national attention — producing favorites like “Plowy McPlowFace” and “Taylor Drift” — Anoka County’s program emphasizes local involvement and a personal connection to public service.

A Critical Part of Winter Operations

The new plow joins a fleet of 27 vehicles that keep Anoka County roads clear during Minnesota winters. “Anoka County is fully staffed this year,” Plemon said. “We run 21 operators on the day shift, from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 16 on the night shift, from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. As soon as the first snowflake hits the ground, we’re out there until the roads are clear.”

The naming contest may be lighthearted, but the plow’s role is serious: clearing more than 1,600 lane-miles of county roads, from main thoroughfares to side streets, ensuring safe travel for residents.

A Legacy of Creative Names

Anoka County’s plows have previously sported memorable names including Darth Blader, Blizzard Wizard, Plow Bunyan, Ctrl Salt Delete, and Scoop! There it is. Such names reflect the community’s humor and engagement while highlighting the people behind the plows.

“The Blizzard of Oz” will serve as both a practical tool for winter safety and a symbol of community pride — a reminder that even the most ordinary machinery can carry a little personality and local spirit.
