EAGAN, Minn.  -  One person was killed and another was injured Friday evening following a three vehicle crash involving a Minnesota Valley Transit Authority transit vehicle at a major Eagan intersection, authorities said.

The collision occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026, at the intersection of Pilot Knob Road and Lone Oak Road. Officers from the Eagan Police Department responded to reports of a serious crash and found three vehicles involved.

Investigators later confirmed the vehicles included an Minnesota Valley Transit Authority transit van, a black sedan, and a black or dark colored compact SUV. The crash occurred on the southeast corner of the intersection, a heavily traveled junction on the city’s west side.

One adult was pronounced dead at the scene. A second individual was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with injuries described as minor. Authorities have not disclosed which vehicles the victims were occupying at the time of the crash.

Two passengers aboard the MVTA transit van, along with the driver, were evaluated by emergency personnel and were not injured, police said.

Due to the severity of the collision and the subsequent investigation, the intersection of Pilot Knob Road and Lone Oak Road remained closed for nearly four hours. Traffic was reopened shortly before 9:00 p.m. as crews cleared the scene and investigators completed initial documentation.

The crash remains under active investigation by the Eagan Police Department with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol, which is conducting a crash reconstruction to determine contributing factors such as speed, traffic signals, or right of way. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the person who died after next of kin have been notified.

Emergency response at the scene included crews from the Eagan Fire Department and M Health Fairview, who provided medical care and assisted with scene management.

As of Saturday, police had not released information on the cause of the crash or indicated whether citations may be issued. Additional details are expected as the investigation continues.
