MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Overnight Highway 10 Resurfacing Begins in Coon Rapids as MnDOT Nears Completion of Major Expansion Project

COON RAPIDS, MN (May 10, 2026) Motorists traveling through Coon Rapids along Highway 10 should prepare for overnight lane reductions and temporary ramp closures beginning Sunday as the Minnesota Department of Transportation enters the final resurfacing phase of its major Highway 10 expansion project.

MnDOT announced that resurfacing and restriping operations will begin Sunday, May 10, along Highway 10 between Round Lake Boulevard and Creek Meadow Drive. The overnight work is scheduled to continue through Thursday, May 21, weather permitting.

Construction activity will take place nightly between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. During those hours, Highway 10 traffic will be reduced to a single lane in both directions through the construction zone. MnDOT also stated that temporary ramp closures will occur as paving work progresses between Hanson Boulevard and Round Lake Boulevard. Drivers are being advised to watch for posted detours, lane shift signage, and changing traffic patterns throughout the corridor.

According to MnDOT, the resurfacing work marks one of the final stages of the broader Highway 10 improvement project, a $40.5 million infrastructure investment aimed at reducing congestion and improving long-term traffic flow in the north metro area.

The majority of the expansion work was completed during the 2025 construction season, when crews added a third lane in each direction between Hanson Boulevard and Round Lake Boulevard. The project also included roadway reconstruction, drainage upgrades, traffic management improvements, guardrail installation, and construction of noise walls adjacent to residential areas along the corridor.

MnDOT said work on several noise walls continued through the winter months, while crews returned this spring to complete final paving and pavement striping operations. Transportation officials expect the project’s most intensive resurfacing work to conclude by late May, with overall project completion anticipated by June 2026.

State transportation officials have cited growing traffic congestion and recurring bottlenecks along the Highway 10 corridor as key reasons behind the project. MnDOT previously stated that backups along the highway increasingly affected nearby local streets in Coon Rapids, contributing to delays and additional safety concerns for motorists.

The expanded roadway is intended to increase traffic capacity, improve driving conditions, reduce congestion-related crashes, and extend the long-term lifespan of the corridor’s pavement infrastructure.

MnDOT is reminding motorists that all construction activity remains weather dependent and schedules may change. Drivers are encouraged to slow down in work zones, remain alert for overnight traffic shifts, and follow all posted construction signage.

Additional project information, traffic updates, and closure maps are available through the Minnesota Department of Transportation Highway 10 Coon Rapids project page and the state’s 511 travel information system.
