The incident occurred May 9 at approximately 9:03 p.m., prompting a multi-agency emergency response involving Fridley Public Safety, Columbia Heights Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and Allina Health EMS.
According to preliminary information released by investigators, the woman was driving a sport utility vehicle northbound on University Avenue NE when an individual inside another vehicle opened fire.
Authorities said the SUV left the roadway after the driver was struck and eventually came to a stop near the Interstate 694 ramp.
The adult female driver was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition.
A juvenile female passenger who was also inside the SUV at the time of the shooting was not physically injured, according to officials.
Law enforcement agencies secured the scene Saturday night as investigators began processing evidence and reconstructing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
As of Monday, May 11, no arrests had been announced. Authorities have not released descriptions of a suspect or suspect vehicle, and investigators have not publicly commented on a possible motive or whether the individuals involved were previously known to one another.
The investigation remains active and is being conducted jointly by the Fridley Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Anoka County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area of University Avenue and Interstate 694 around 9 p.m. Saturday evening, particularly individuals with dashcam footage or additional information related to the shooting, to contact authorities.
