COON RAPIDS, MN (May 11, 2026) The City of Coon Rapids will host its annual Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 30, offering children and families a free community event focused on bicycle safety education, riding skills development, and injury prevention.

According to the city, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Lions Coon Creek Park, located at 11861 Hanson Blvd. The program is organized through partnerships involving the Coon Rapids Police Department, Coon Rapids Fire Department, Allina Health, and Safe Kids Anoka County. City officials describe the Bike Rodeo as a hands-on youth safety initiative designed to help children improve bicycle handling skills while learning safe riding practices and traffic awareness.

The event will feature multiple interactive safety stations where participants can practice core riding techniques and learn safety rules commonly associated with bicycle operation near roads, trails, and pedestrian areas.

According to event materials, activities will include a maneuvering obstacle course where children can practice starting, stopping, balancing, and weaving through riding patterns intended to simulate real-world bicycle movement scenarios.

Participants will also receive instruction on proper hand signals used while riding near traffic and pedestrians, along with guidance from Coon Rapids police officers regarding bicycle safety rules, riding etiquette, and local safety expectations.

Organizers say professional helmet fitting assistance will also be available during the event to help ensure children are wearing properly fitted helmets, which federal safety agencies continue to identify as one of the most effective methods for reducing serious head injuries in bicycle crashes.

New helmets will be available for purchase onsite for families needing protective equipment, and a limited number of donated bicycles will be available for temporary use during the event for children who do not have access to their own bicycles.

Community-based bicycle safety programs such as bike rodeos have become common across Minnesota and the United States as municipalities, schools, healthcare organizations, and law enforcement agencies continue working to reduce preventable bicycle-related injuries involving children.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, proper helmet use, visibility awareness, bicycle handling skills, and traffic education remain major factors in reducing serious cycling injuries among youth riders.

The city says the event is intended to provide a safe and educational environment where children can practice those skills while encouraging outdoor recreation and healthy physical activity.
