City officials announced that the 2026 Home Remodeling Tour will take place Sunday, May 17, from noon to 4 p.m. The free event allows members of the public to visit participating homes in an open house-style format without registration.
According to the city, the featured homes highlight a range of remodeling projects completed through the Home for Generations program, which encourages homeowners to modernize aging properties while remaining in the community. The program provides qualifying homeowners with access to grants, permit fee rebates, financing assistance, and architectural consultation services for major remodeling projects valued at $35,000 or more. Homes participating in the program must generally be owner-occupied and at least 20 years old. (coonrapidsmn.gov)
City officials say the program is intended to strengthen the city’s housing stock by helping residents reinvest in existing homes rather than relocating outside the community.
Featured Remodeling Projects
The 2026 tour includes four homes representing different types of residential remodeling and expansion projects.
One featured property, located at 2084 123rd Lane, underwent a major open-concept redesign focused on improving the flow between living spaces. Homeowners Christine Plombon and Thomas Nelson removed interior walls to create a more connected layout between the kitchen and surrounding living areas.
The remodeled kitchen now features dual-painted cabinetry, a herringbone tile backsplash, and a large center island designed for seating and gathering.
Another featured home at 11669 Tulip Street showcases a multi-generational basement finishing project completed by homeowner Patti Hiatt after purchasing the townhouse in 2024.
According to city materials, approximately 1,500 square feet of unfinished basement space was converted into functional living areas designed to support extended family use. Improvements include:
At 3562 114th Lane, homeowners Lori and Matthew Melton completed a full interior modernization project after purchasing what city materials described as a “fixer-upper” home that had remained largely unchanged for decades.
The renovation included removing interior walls to create a more open layout, replacing flooring throughout the primary living spaces, and completing a full kitchen renovation. The home previously contained several older design features, including a built-in intercom system and trash compactor.
The fourth featured property, located at 10973 Eagle Street, highlights a home addition project completed by Tyrel and Sophia Hoopman.
To increase natural light and year-round living space in their 1980 split-entry home, the homeowners added a 12-by-14-foot four-season sunroom featuring large windows and direct backyard access through an adjoining side deck.
Supporting Long-Term Housing Investment
Municipal housing reinvestment programs similar to Home for Generations have become increasingly common in suburban communities seeking to preserve aging housing stock while addressing changing household needs and rising housing costs.
City officials say the program helps residents adapt homes for long-term occupancy, including multi-generational living arrangements, accessibility improvements, expanded family space, and modernization projects that improve functionality and property value.
The annual remodeling tour also serves as a public education initiative by allowing residents to view completed projects and gather ideas for future renovations.
Representatives connected to the Home for Generations program are expected to be available during the event to answer questions regarding eligibility requirements, financing options, available incentives, and remodeling resources.
