BLAINE NEWS | Michael Kim Shoots Historic 59 at 3M Open as Championship Race Intensifies
BLAINE, MN (July 25, 2026). Michael Kim delivered one of the most extraordinary rounds in 3M Open history Friday, shooting a 12-under-par 59 at TPC Twin Cities and moving into the lead entering the weekend.
Kim completed the second round without a bogey, using a late birdie to break 60 and record one of the rarest achievements in professional golf.
His performance moved him ahead of a field headlined by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who entered the tournament as the overwhelming favorite but fell outside the top 10 during the second round.
Historic round changes the tournament
Kim’s 59 was the lowest round of the tournament and placed him in control entering Saturday’s third round.
TPC Twin Cities has produced low scores in previous 3M Opens, but water hazards, deep rough and demanding tee shots can quickly punish mistakes. Kim combined accurate approach play with exceptional putting to separate himself from the field.
The round also carries significant implications in the FedExCup standings. With the PGA Tour regular season approaching its conclusion, players near the playoff cutoff are competing for points needed to qualify for the postseason.
Kim’s position in Blaine could substantially improve his standing if he remains near the top through Sunday.
Scheffler remains a major attraction
Scheffler’s first appearance at the 3M Open has generated increased attention for Minnesota’s only PGA Tour event.
The tournament began Thursday and concludes Sunday at TPC Twin Cities. Saturday’s third round opened to spectators at 6:30 a.m., with play beginning at approximately 7 a.m.
The tournament scheduled an Andy Grammer concert following Saturday’s competition. Sunday’s final round will conclude with the championship ceremony after play.
Beyond the competition, the 3M Open brings thousands of spectators, workers and volunteers to Blaine, generating business for hotels, restaurants and other establishments throughout the North Metro.
Kim entered the weekend with the lead, but two rounds remained before a champion could be determined.
