COON RAPIDS NEWS | City Seeks Residents’ Input on Priorities That Will Shape Coon Rapids Through 2050

COON RAPIDS, MN (July 25, 2026). Coon Rapids residents are being invited to help shape the city’s long-term direction by completing a public survey addressing development, housing, transportation, parks, water resources and other public facilities.

The feedback will inform the city’s 2050 Comprehensive Plan, a policy document intended to guide major planning and investment decisions over the coming decades.

Residents asked to help define the city’s future

A comprehensive plan establishes a community’s long-range vision and provides a framework for decisions involving land use, housing, transportation, infrastructure, parks and municipal services.

For residents, those decisions can eventually influence where different types of housing are built, how neighborhoods connect to roads and trails, which areas are considered for redevelopment and how the city prepares public facilities for future needs.

The survey gives residents an opportunity to identify what they value about Coon Rapids, what challenges they believe require greater attention and what priorities city leaders should consider as the plan is developed.

Participation during the early stages can help city planners understand community priorities before a formal draft is completed.

Community engagement planned throughout 2026

According to the city, community engagement will continue throughout 2026 as staff members meet with residents and gather feedback.

A report will be drafted and revised during 2027. The final comprehensive plan is scheduled to be submitted to the Metropolitan Council in 2028.

The process will extend beyond the initial survey. Metropolitan Council requirements call for a public hearing, approval by the local governing body and a review period for neighboring communities and other affected jurisdictions before a final plan is submitted.

The deadline for metropolitan communities to submit their comprehensive plan updates is December 31, 2028.

Plan covers housing, transportation and public resources

The 2050 Comprehensive Plan will address several areas that can directly affect residents and neighborhoods.

Housing and land-use policies can guide the location and character of future residential and commercial development. Transportation planning can affect roads, public transit connections, sidewalks, bicycle routes and the movement of people throughout the city.

Planning for parks, water resources and public facilities can also help the city determine where improvements may be needed as infrastructure ages and community needs change.

The comprehensive plan does not approve an individual construction project or guarantee that a particular proposal will move forward. Instead, it establishes broader policies that city officials can use when evaluating future development, infrastructure investments and public-service needs.

Previous plan adopted in 2019

Coon Rapids’ current comprehensive plan guides the city through 2040. The City Council adopted that document in December 2019 following a planning process that included online surveys, public meetings and community comments.

State law requires cities in the Twin Cities metropolitan area to update their comprehensive plans every 10 years. The Metropolitan Council reviews those plans for consistency with regional systems and policies, as well as compatibility with neighboring and affected jurisdictions.

The city has not announced a deadline for completing the current survey. Residents who want their priorities considered during the early planning stage are encouraged to participate while it remains available.
