Police arrested a suspect with assistance from Metro Transit officers, but investigators have not disclosed what led to the shooting at Seventh Street and Nicollet Mall.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (September 14, 2026). A man was critically wounded after being shot multiple times Sunday morning near the Mary Tyler Moore statue in downtown Minneapolis, according to police.
Minneapolis officers responded at approximately 11:28 a.m. to the intersection of Seventh Street South and Nicollet Mall after 911 callers reported hearing several gunshots and seeing a man lying on the ground.
Officers found the wounded man near the prominent downtown landmark. Paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition.
Police did not release the man’s name, age or additional information about his injuries.
SUSPECT ARRESTED NEARBY
Officers located a suspected shooter nearby with assistance from Metro Transit Police and took him into custody, according to information released by the Minneapolis Police Department.
The man was brought to the city’s Public Service Building for questioning and later booked into the Hennepin County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
A jail booking is not a formal determination of guilt. Prosecutors will decide what charges, if any, should be filed after reviewing the evidence gathered by investigators.
Authorities had not publicly identified the suspect as of the research cutoff.
Police also had not said whether the victim and suspect knew one another, what may have preceded the gunfire or whether a weapon was recovered.
GUNFIRE AT A PROMINENT DOWNTOWN LOCATION
The shooting occurred near one of the most recognizable locations on Nicollet Mall.
The Mary Tyler Moore statue stands at the corner of Seventh Street and Nicollet Mall, commemorating the television character’s famous hat toss during the opening sequence of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”
The surrounding blocks include offices, hotels, restaurants, stores, transit routes and gathering spaces used by residents, workers and visitors.
The late-morning timing placed the gunfire in a highly visible public area during daylight hours.
It also follows other serious episodes of violence in and around downtown Minneapolis during 2026, including the September 2 shooting at an apartment building near Grant Street that left two victims and the suspected shooter dead and wounded several civilians and police officers.
The circumstances of Sunday’s shooting appear separate, and police have announced no connection between the incidents.
