MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Anoka County Warns of Major Coon Rapids Traffic Delays as Main Street Construction Begins
COON RAPIDS, MN (September 16, 2026). Motorists traveling through Coon Rapids should prepare for major delays through October after construction began on a heavily traveled section of Main Street, according to the Anoka County Highway Department.
The work affects Main Street, also designated County State Aid Highway 14, from the Highway 10 bridge to approximately 200 feet east of Coon Creek Boulevard, or County State Aid Highway 18.
Anoka County announced the start of the project Tuesday and warned residents that nighttime construction is expected throughout the work period.
The county has not described the road as completely closed. Motorists should nevertheless expect construction activity, changing traffic patterns, reduced travel speeds and possible lane restrictions while crews work through the corridor.
The project’s location makes the warning particularly important. The affected segment connects Highway 10 with Coon Creek Boulevard and carries residents between residential neighborhoods, commercial areas and the regional highway system.
Delays may extend beyond the immediate construction area during morning and evening travel periods, particularly when lane restrictions reduce the roadway’s normal capacity.
Nighttime construction may lessen some daytime congestion, but it can create different risks. Drivers traveling after dark should watch for workers, equipment, temporary signs, pavement transitions and changes to lane configurations.
Residents living near the project may also experience construction noise, lighting and truck activity during nighttime hours.
Anoka County has instructed motorists to drive cautiously and expect major delays throughout October. Drivers who regularly use Main Street should allow additional travel time and consider alternate routes when practical.
The county’s construction and detour information may change as work advances. Motorists should rely on posted traffic controls at the project site even when navigation applications show a different route or travel condition.
