DETROIT LAKES, MN (October 8, 2026).
Minnesota State Community and Technical College has announced plans to close its Detroit Lakes campus, a decision that would eventually end the institution's physical presence in a community it has served through career and technical education.
The closure is tentatively scheduled for summer 2028 or later, giving college administrators time to plan academic transitions and address the consequences for students, employees and local educational partnerships. College leadership described the decision as difficult.
The planned closure would leave M State operating three campuses in Moorhead, Fergus Falls and Wadena. For Detroit Lakes residents, the decision raises questions about future access to nearby technical training, the ability of current students to complete their programs and the potential loss of an institution connected to the regional workforce.

Students enrolled in programs that require specialized equipment or in-person instruction could face greater travel demands if equivalent courses are offered only at another campus. The consequences will depend on the transition arrangements the college develops before closure.
The announcement is also significant for employers that depend on technical colleges to prepare workers for skilled occupations. A campus closure can affect more than the institution's operating budget because training programs often serve as recruitment pipelines for local businesses.
The proposed timeline leaves room for planning, but it does not eliminate uncertainty for students considering enrollment or employees making longer-term decisions.
M State has not described the closure as immediate. The college expects the Detroit Lakes campus to continue operating while the transition is developed.
The next important questions concern which programs will continue through the transition, how students will be supported and what educational opportunities will remain available locally after the campus closes.
