The district has tightened security for football games and plans to extend additional precautions into basketball season following an October 2 shooting that wounded two people.

EDEN PRAIRIE, MN (October 15, 2026). Eden Prairie Schools has implemented additional security measures at Aerie Stadium following an October 2 shooting outside the high school football venue that wounded two people and forced the evacuation of a homecoming game.

The new procedures began with Wednesday night's game against Eastview and will remain in place for the rest of the football season.

The district also plans to extend heightened security into the upcoming basketball season.

The changes include metal detectors, additional police and security personnel, restrictions on stadium entrances, student identification requirements and new rules governing bags and reentry.

District officials say the objective is to restore confidence in school events while reducing the risk of another violent incident.

The October 2 Shooting

The incident occurred during Eden Prairie's homecoming football game against Minnetonka.

According to reporting on the investigation, a disturbance developed outside the stadium and was followed by gunfire in a nearby parking area.

Two people were wounded.

The shooting prompted the evacuation of the game and generated widespread concern among students, families and staff.

A school athletic event that should have brought the community together instead became the scene of an emergency response and criminal investigation.

The incident also raised questions about how schools can protect large public gatherings when disturbances occur outside the immediate spectator area.

Criminal Charges Filed

Five people have been charged in connection with the incident.

An 18-year-old Minneapolis man identified by investigators as the suspected shooter faces felony charges.

Four additional men, ages 18 to 20, have been charged with third-degree riot.

One of the individuals charged was among those wounded in the shooting, according to MPR News.

The charges are allegations.

Each defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the judicial process.

The existence of charges does not establish that every disputed circumstance surrounding the shooting has been resolved.

Two Entrances and Metal Detectors

Under the new procedures, the district is limiting stadium access to two entrances.

Both entrances will have metal detectors.

The change is intended to make entry screening more consistent and reduce opportunities for prohibited items to enter the venue.

Additional police officers and security personnel will also be present.

Those measures are likely to change the experience of attending games.

Families and students may need more time to enter, particularly when large numbers of spectators arrive shortly before kickoff.

The district's rules make advance preparation especially important.

No Reentry and No Admission After Halftime

Spectators who leave the stadium will not be permitted to reenter.

The district has also established a cutoff for admission after halftime.

These restrictions are intended to reduce uncontrolled movement into and out of the venue during an event.

They may also affect families who previously arrived late or temporarily left the stadium.

Visitors should therefore plan their arrival and remain aware that leaving the venue may end their opportunity to return.

Student Identification Requirements

High school students attending the Eastview game were required to present valid student identification from Eden Prairie or Eastview.

The district's broader event rules should be consulted for identification requirements at subsequent games.

Identification checks can help school officials determine who is entering a student-centered event.

However, they also require clear communication so eligible students are not unexpectedly turned away.

Parents should verify the current admission procedures before sending students to games.

Restrictions on Bags

Large bags and backpacks are prohibited under the new rules.

The restrictions are intended to make screening more manageable and reduce the difficulty of identifying prohibited items.

Families should review the district's published list of permitted belongings before attending.

Rules involving bags, personal belongings and screening accommodations may be especially important for spectators carrying medical supplies or other necessary items.

The district should provide clear procedures for handling such circumstances.

Superintendent Addresses the Community

Superintendent Josh Swanson told families that the district is working to restore the sense of safety disrupted by the shooting.

He described the new procedures as immediate measures intended to make school events safer.

Swanson also emphasized the importance of allowing students and families to regain the enjoyment and community connection associated with school activities.

That concern is significant.

Athletic events are not simply competitions. They bring together students, families, alumni, school employees and neighborhood residents.

When violence occurs, the effects can continue long after the emergency response ends.

Some families may hesitate to return even when additional security is introduced.

Security Beyond Football

Eden Prairie Schools plans to maintain heightened precautions during the basketball season.

District officials identified football and basketball games as priorities because they tend to attract large crowds.

The district is also reviewing procedures for other school events and activities.

That broader review could help determine whether additional safeguards are appropriate at concerts, performances and other gatherings.

Not every event presents identical security challenges, however.

Effective planning requires attention to crowd size, venue layout, access points and the circumstances surrounding each activity.

A Community Discussion Is Planned

The district has announced plans for a community event to discuss the new safety measures.

A date had not been established in the reporting reviewed.

Such a discussion could provide families with an opportunity to ask about security staffing, screening procedures, student supervision and how the district will assess whether the changes are effective.

The conversation may also address how schools can maintain a welcoming environment while implementing stricter controls.

What Families Should Know

For upcoming games, spectators should expect additional security screening, fewer entry points, restrictions on bags and limits on reentry.

High school students should bring appropriate identification.

Families should allow extra time to enter and review the district's official rules before attending.

The district's new procedures represent a significant response to the October 2 shooting.

Their longer-term effectiveness will depend on consistent implementation, coordination with law enforcement and continued communication with students and families.

The goal is not only to prevent another emergency but to restore confidence that school events can remain safe places for community participation.
