Meanwhile, Gov. Walz has activated the MN National Guard to support relief efforts.

A state of emergency has been declared in the city of Jackson amid intense flooding brought on by Minnesota's recent rainstorms.

Residents were informed of the declaration Saturday night via the city's Jackson Connect app, per KKOJ radio:

The alerts say that the city, home to more than 3,000 people, has suffered "losses of a significant proportion from flooding, brought on by excessive and continuous rain" that started on Friday.

Officials were asking residents to stay at home and refrain from driving to ensure city services remained operational.

While crews worked to restore electricity, volunteers came out to help with sandbagging efforts on Saturday as well as Sunday morning:

A Sunday morning Facebook post from Taylor's Pet Spaw, a business located on First Street, shows the extend of the flooding:

Also on Saturday, Gov. Tim Walz declared a peacetime emergency, authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to help support flood relief efforts across the state.

“Across the state, intense rain has had catastrophic effects. Flooding has left entire communities under feet of water, causing severe damage to property and numerous road closures. As flooding continues, the National Guard is ready to step up to help our neighbors," Walz said in a statement.“Their response will provide invaluable support that will be critical in ensuring the safety of Minnesotans during this difficult time.”
