According to criminal charges filed in Chisago County District Court, James Alan Johnson has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with the violent attack that unfolded May 11 inside the couple’s residence in the city of Wyoming.
Authorities say the attack may have turned fatal had it not been for the actions of an Amazon delivery driver who arrived at the home during the assault.
According to the criminal complaint, the driver was delivering a package shortly before 1 p.m. when he reportedly heard screaming coming from inside the residence. Investigators say the driver looked into the home and saw a woman covered in blood while Johnson allegedly stood nearby holding a hammer.
Rather than leaving the scene, the delivery driver reportedly entered the home and ordered Johnson to drop the weapon while simultaneously calling emergency dispatchers for help.
Court documents state Johnson complied and handed over the hammer before retreating toward the basement area of the home. When officers from the Wyoming Police Department arrived moments later, they reportedly found the victim lying on the floor bleeding heavily from head injuries while the delivery driver remained inside assisting her.
Investigators documented significant injuries to the victim’s head, arms, and hands. According to the complaint, officers observed two large bloody indentations on the woman’s head that were consistent with repeated blows from a hammer. The victim reportedly told authorities that her husband struck her in the head multiple times and that she managed to stop the attack temporarily by kicking him in the groin while he was on top of her.
Emergency responders treated the woman at the scene before she was transported for additional medical care. Authorities have not publicly released her condition beyond describing the injuries as severe.
The criminal complaint further alleges that Johnson later admitted to investigators that the assault was planned in advance.
According to charging documents, Johnson told detectives that he had become increasingly distressed over worsening financial problems connected to a business he managed, which he described as approaching a “crisis point.” Prosecutors say Johnson stated he feared his wife would eventually be forced to survive on “significantly reduced” Social Security income if the business collapsed financially.
Investigators allege Johnson admitted he had been contemplating killing his wife for several days and intended to render her unconscious before ultimately taking her life.
Johnson was taken into custody at the scene without further incident and is currently being held at the Chisago County Jail. Multiple reports indicate bail was set at $1 million pending further court proceedings.
The case has drawn significant public attention across Minnesota because of both the severity of the allegations and the unusual role played by the Amazon delivery driver, whose intervention investigators say likely prevented the assault from escalating further.
Domestic violence advocates note that many domestic assaults escalate rapidly behind closed doors, often with little warning to outsiders. National domestic violence organizations estimate that millions of Americans experience intimate partner violence annually, with financial stress frequently cited as one contributing factor in abusive household situations.
Under Minnesota law, attempted first-degree murder carries some of the state’s most severe criminal penalties if prosecutors prove premeditation and intent beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation remains ongoing.
