Minnesota DNR Offers $1 Million In Grants For Community & Urban Forestry Projects

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced $1 million in competitive grants to enhance urban and community trees across the state, funded by the U.S. Forest Service’s Inflation Reduction Act. The new “Centering Communities in Canopy Solutions” grants are designed to empower underrepresented communities in the development and execution of urban forestry projects, addressing issues like pollution exposure and limited access to green spaces.

“Minnesota’s urban and community forests are crucial to the health and well-being of our neighborhoods,” said Molly Codding, the DNR’s community environmental justice coordinator. She emphasized the program’s potential to strengthen tree canopies while engaging communities facing environmental challenges.

Grants of up to $100,000 are available to place-based nonprofits, community groups, and other eligible organizations that partner with local entities. Funds may be used for a variety of initiatives, including staff hiring, community outreach, tree planting, and stewardship plans. No matching funds are required, and applications are due by October 28.

To facilitate the application process, the DNR is hosting six in-person grant application sessions throughout September and October. The first session is scheduled for September 23. For more details and the complete schedule, visit the DNR website.
