Arrest in Blaine Mall Shooting Uncovers Suspect's Link To Earlier Fatal Incident

BLAINE, MN – June 11, 2025 – An arrest in connection with Friday's fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy outside Northtown Mall in Blaine has revealed the suspect's alleged involvement in a separate shooting death in Columbia Heights earlier this year, according to newly released court records.

Sudais Abdi Omar, 15, of Brooklyn Park, was shot in the chest in the Best Buy parking lot of Northtown Mall on Friday evening and was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. Authorities identified Ayub Abdullahi Mohamed, 20, of Blaine, as one of three suspects seen fleeing the scene. Mohamed was subsequently apprehended at a nearby SkyZone Trampoline Park, where a gun magazine was found in his sock, as detailed in the criminal complaint.

The two other suspects in the Friday shooting, aged 14 and 15, have not yet been arrested, and the investigation remains ongoing, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

Mohamed is currently being held at the Anoka County Jail on a $100,000 bail for allegedly aiding an offender to avoid arrest in the Northtown Mall incident. His attorney has not yet returned a request for comment on the charge.

Court records indicate that Mohamed was previously charged in March with aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. This charge stems from a February 28 incident in Columbia Heights, where he allegedly brought a rifle into a vehicle. A 16-year-old boy inside the car reportedly handled the rifle, unaware it was loaded, and it discharged, fatally striking the driver, 20-year-old Ibrahim Faisal Dabarani of Minneapolis. Mohamed posted bond following that charge. The teenager involved in the February incident also faces the same manslaughter charge, with a hearing scheduled for July 17 to determine if he will be certified as an adult.

According to Tuesday's criminal complaint related to the Blaine shooting, police were dispatched to the Best Buy parking lot at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Friday following reports of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers were informed that several individuals had fled the area. Omar was found in the parking lot with a chest wound, and shell casings were discovered nearby.

A 911 caller, identified as a Best Buy employee, reported seeing three male suspects run from the shooting scene into the mall, then exit towards Sky Zone. Witness descriptions provided to officers led to Mohamed's location and arrest in a Sky Zone bathroom.
